Loris Zanatta: "It is not an insult to call Pope Francis a populist" |
Fortuna: Pope Francis?
Zanatta: It is no insult to say that he is a typical representative of Latin populism. His idea is that there is a people that is above the political agreements and the constitutional people and is the guardian of historical legitimacy: the people of God. No pope has so often used the word people. Pope Francis does not distinguish economic liberalism from political liberalism. He often uses the word pluralism against the market, which, he says, homogenizes the world, destroys cultures and peoples. His idea of pluralism is that of peoples and cultures, which are generally not pluralistic. His point of view is that of Latin Catholicism: the poor are the protectors of the Catholic virtues. They are the true people. The others are not, even if they win elections.

"The purge of the Argentine episcopacy continues, and the Pope's activity for the creation of a new Argentine episcopate is truly remarkable, and if anyone were to take the trouble to count the reassignments, forced retirements, the transfers, the promotions and the new appointments, that they would not only exceed every other country, but the number would be absolutely astonishing in proportion."
The Spanish columnist, Francisco Fernandez de la Cigoña wrote on August 3, 2017, the same day of the retirement of Monsignor Virginio Dominigo Bressanelli as Bishop of Neuquén. On the 1st of August, Pope Francis had retired Gustavo Óscar Zanchetta, Bishop of Oran, who was only 53 years old. Monsignor Zanchetta had been appointed bishop by Francis in July 2013. Bishop Bressanelli, formerly Superior General of the Dehonian Order, As diocesan bishop of Neuquén.

An international catholic blog has launched a scathing attack on Francis Brennan's latest RTE show over a segment that included an Irish priest performing a drag act as Shirley Bassey.
'Francis Brennan's Tour of Vietnam' features 12 travellers, including Fr. Richard Geoghegan, touring the Asian country under the hotelier's guidance.
In Sunday's episode Fr Geoghegan - a parish priest in Carrick on Suir, Co Tipperary - is seen donning a dress, lipstick and a blonde wig before miming a Shirley Bassey hit.
His fellow travellers are bowled over by the performance and Fr Geoghegan later explains: "If you have a talent, why not use that talent because we suppress our talents.
"God himself said 'I've given you the talent, now go forth and use them.' So I think I did that and achieved it."

"Dear Tosatti, at first I wanted to write to you of what is more of a marvel for us, the Italians, that we prefer that nothing is lost. We have everything we can wish for: Mrs. Boldrini, Count Gentilini, the teacher Bonino and above all the great Pope Bergoglio, who loves and protects all of us Catholics and Italians above all. But do we need anything else to be calm and serene? Then I read the article by Father Spadaro in Civiltà Cattolica and finally I understood what is the origin of all the evils in the Church, in politics and in society: conservative and traditionalist Catholics. And I wondered if Spadaro would not be quite right to distrust these old, reactionary, sectarian, and Manicheans, who still insist on the claim that Jesus Christ is God incarnate, resurrected and redemptive of the world. But have these Pharisees read or understood the great prophet Karl Rahner? Then, still in the morning, I read the insinuations - intimidations - made to Pope Ratzinger on the story of Regensburg and I was surprised. But are traditionalists the danger of Catholic faith and civilization? What if it were the others? Do you want to see, I asked myself, that this friend who was explaining me could have been right, unlike the general opinion. You see, the great Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini in the 2005 conclave (when Ratzinger was elected) would have dissuaded his colleagues from electing such a Jesuit cardinal explaining that if he were elected pope, the prestige of the Society of Jesus would be compromised for another hundred years, and in a more painful way than with Pope Clement XIV, who in 1773 dissolved the Society of Jesus? But not satisfied with unverifiable indiscretion, I tried to understand when, why and how the Company was reconstituted by Pius VII in 1814. I admit that the story is not clear about this, but it follows that after 5 years of prison, that when Pío VII returned to Rome on 24 of May of 1814, one of the first things that did, two months later, the 7 of August, was the reconstruction of the Company of Jesus. Immediately after, he obtained the restitution of all the territories subtracted to the Church. I repeat, history does not explain it, but after the liberation of the Pope, the restitution of the territories and the reconstruction of the Company took two months. What would Napoleon himself have suggested? Well ... maybe Tosatti himself could explain it. Your RVC . "
Rome (kath.net) The brutal assassination of P. Jacques Hamels by two Islamic terrorists during the evening Mass on 26 July 2016 is planned with a Mass at 7 pm on 26 July 2017 in the church Saint-Etienne in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. Dominique Lebrun, Archbishop of Rouen, will preside at the Mass as reported on the home page of the diocese of Rouen. This is reported by "Zenit". "The Synod has clearly stated that the individual bishops are responsible for this way [of the remarried divorced] to lead people to the full sacramental grace. This interpretation is there, no doubt. But I have never changed my private and subjective position. As a Bishop and Cardinal, I have represented the doctrine of the Church, which I also know in its fundamental developments from the Council of Trent to Gaudium et Spes, which constitute the two guidelines. This is Catholic, the rest belongs to other convictions. I do not understand how different theological and dogmatic interpretative positions can be reconciled with the clear words of Jesus and St. Paul. Both have clarified that you can not marry a second time when the legal partner still lives. "
"I do not understand why you do not start a dialogue in peace and serenity. I do not understand what obstacles stand in the way. Why are such tensions made public, too?"
"The emeritus pope spoke of the zeitgeist, but St. Paul spoke of the spirit of God and the spirit of the world. This contrast is very important and must be understood. The affirmation of faith - the Church and the bishops - does not depend on the applause of an uninformed mass. And another thing: our work is treasured and appreciated when we convince a man to give himself completely to Jesus Christ by placing his existence in the hands of Jesus. In his first epistle, St. Peter speaks of Jesus Christ the souls of souls! And today one speaks of responsibility for culture and the environment? Yes, but we have many competent laity. People who bear responsibility in politics: we have governments and parliaments, etc. The Apostles did not transfer Jesus to the secular government of the world. There were prince-bishops in earlier centuries and they have not done well to the Church."
"They live as if God did not exist. The problem is not secularization but de-Christianization."
Rome (idea) - Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller - until the beginning of July Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine and the Faith - has drawn a dramatic image of Christianity and the Catholic Church in Europe. "All the elements of the faith lived, the popular piety, have collapsed", he said in an interview with the Italian daily "Il Foglio" (issue 21 July). All of Europe is in a "process of forced de-Christianization, which goes far beyond simple secularization." Man is defined "strictly without God and without transcendence." In the Catholic Church, participation in ecclesiastical life, the spread of faith and the new vocations of priests and religious, has greatly diminished. Müller warned the church not to waste its powers in internal struggles. According to him, "so-called progressives" seek victory, "persecuting all so-called conservatives". The 69-year-old was Bishop of Regensburg from 2002 to 2012, and from 2012 to 2017 Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine and the Faith.

[Katholisches] "Every Catholic, especially every bishop and every cardinal, has a positive and constructive relationship with the Pope. But this is anything but courtly manners and the groveling of subordinates, against which Pope Francis always spoke."
"That means that not everything he does and says is, from the outset, already perfect and unquestionable."
"There should be no personal cult and a pope-touching tourism."
Cardinal Gerhard Mueller, prefect of the Roman Congregation for the Congregation of the Doctrine and the Faith, no longer in office, on Pope Franziskus, report of the German Press Agency (DPA), quoted from Der Spiegel v. July 19, 2017.

"Poor Müller! It was not enough to step through the pope, and after the first stomach pain (see the interview with the Passau Neue Presse ), he had to pretend that nothing had happened, and that the Pope wanted him nothing but good. Now this sympathetic trifle came through his native Germany, where, as is well known, he is very popular among his countrymen."
"The one who was appointed was not, as expected, the Assistant Secretary, Archbishop Agostino DiNoia, but the under-secretary, Monsignor Giacomo Morandi, the man who was placed in the Ratzinger and Muller Congregation a year and a half ago. A pretty quick career. He is really born under a lucky star, like that of Beniamino, the Prefect of the Clerical Congregation and the great director of the pope's court. All just coincidences."
